What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi translated means “Supreme Ultimate.” Most people don’t have an idea what Tai Chi is. Many think it is a fighting Martial Art. Tai Chi is a slow form of exercise consisting of 13, 24, 37, or 108 movements. With the movement, it stimulates every organ in your body and immune system along with numerous other bodily functions. Here at HealthQuest, it is referred to as “moving meditation,” a slow moving exercise that improves health. To do Tai Chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner with each posture flowing into the next without pausing. Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice Tai Chi.
Originally developed as a form of self-defense, in ancient China, it was taught to soldiers of the Emperors. With very slow movements the soldiers became aware of the way their bodies were reacting to the moves. They became relaxed and soon the muscles remembered the moves. When the soldiers went to battle they could react quickly using these moves.
Tai Chi has evolved over several thousand years of research in China and now it is growing in popularity worldwide. It is practiced in over 70 countries on 6 continents.
